Our next Hospice Quilt Blocks

Giselle would like to announce the next two Hospice quilt blocks!

String quilt block (click on the name to go to the video tutorial)

She has chosen pinks and greens for the string block with a common white strip across the diagonal centre of each block. The strips can be any width and the white can be a solid or tone on tone.

All the instructions are on the Missouri Star tutorial (click on the link above) but here are some photos of our process to help you along:

Unfinished size = 12.5"

Unfinished size = 12.5"

Use a short machine stitch (I used 1.5 on my Pfaff)to add the strips. The short, tight stitch makes removing the paper super easy and quick. As each strip is added in a sew and flip manner, press for crispness.

Trim to 12.5 inches

Remove paper.
Giselle used this paper from the Dollar Store for her blocks. To make a full 12.5 inch block, just zigzag stitch two pages together and cut to size. I used newsprint sheets that I have for batik wax removal.
Total blocks required: 35

Tiny house quilt block (click on the name to go to the video tutorial)

The second block is the Tiny house block, again using a Missouri Star video tutorial. These blocks will be made in solids using a bright palette. The unfinished block is small, 4.5" x 6", so accuracy is important! If you need a refresher on sewing a scant 1/4 " seam and accuracy in general, watch Krista Hennebury's webinar on the Modern Quilt Guild site.

All paid members of the Moncton MQG are members of the Modern Quilt Guild so log in at the Modern Quilt Guild.

  • Click on FOR MMQ Members.
  • Click on Pattern, Webinars and Articles.
  • On the right hand sidebar, filter by Webinars.
  • Filter by Piecing.
  • Open Krista's webinar called, "Who Gives a Flying FQ About Accuracy".
The fabric and measurements required for each block:
2 house sides - 2" x 3"
1 house above door - 1.5" x 4.5"
1 door - 1.5" x 3"
1 roof - 2.5" x 4.5"
2 sky - 2.5" square (please use blue)

Make your house blocks vibrant with strong contrasting colors, again all in solid fabrics and with blue sky pieces.

4.5" x 6" unfinished block. That scant 1/4 inch seam will be super important. A great block to practice accuracy!

This will be one fun, bright quilt for Hospice!

Total blocks required: 182
