Charity and Comfort Quilts

Our current project is to make completed quilts for the Hospice of Greater Moncton, a 10 bed facility scheduled to open in November 2020. Our goal is to provide a total of 20 quilts, of various designs, so that quilts can be rotated as needed.

New quilt blocks are added to the bottom of this post so scroll to find the most recent block designs and updates on blocks required.

Our first design is the Scrappy Log Cabin Block We are asking for members to make monochromatic blocks trimmed to 12.5 inches unfinished.
PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE RECEIVED ENOUGH SCRAPPY LOG CABIN BLOCKS. AS WELL, WE DO NOT NEED ANY MORE DEEP BREATH BLOCKS. (AS OF MAY 1, 2019)

Our second design is the Modern Boy Quilt. Follow the measurements given on the Simple Stripes Quilt Tutorial. The blocks will be trimmed to 10.5 inches unfinished so just leave your blocks untrimmed.

Measures 60 x 80 (8 blocks down x 6 blocks across @ 10.5 " square = 48 blocks total)

Two quilts will be made in this design:

  1. Colors to be used for the first quilt are: brown, turquoise or aqua, cream or beige. Please note: No more blocks needed as of May 27, 2019
  2. Colors to be used in the second quilt are: green, yellow and blue (all brights) TOP IS COMPLETE (AS OF MAY 25, 2019)

Our third design is a Heart Quilt.

Please note: No blocks needed as of May 27, 2019.

We will need blue hearts and white hearts for a total of 35 - 12.5 inch squares to make a quilt 60 x 84 inches.

Please note: White is either solid, or tone on tone, NOT low volume for this quilt.

Cutting instructions:

2 - 2 inch x 5 inch blue
5 - 2 inch x 9.5 inch blues
4 - 2 inch squares white background
2 - 5 inch squares white background
2 - 9.5 inch x 2.5 inch white background
2 - 12.5 inch x 2.5 inch white background

**For white heart, blue background, alternate cutting instructions.

Once your centre is pieced, it should measure 9.5 inches square. Add the two strips to the side edges, then sew the top and bottom strips. Trim to 12.5 inches.

Giselle would like to announce the next two Hospice quilt blocks!

String quilt block (click on the name to go to the video tutorial)

She has chosen pinks and greens for the string block with a common white strip across the diagonal centre of each block. The strips can be any width and the white can be a solid or tone on tone.

All the instructions are on the Missouri Star tutorial (click on the link above) but here are some photos of our process to help you along:

Unfinished - 12.5 inches

Unfinished - 12.5 inches

Use a short machine stitch (I used 1.5 on my Pfaff)to add the strips. The short, tight stitch makes removing the paper super easy and quick. As each strip is added in a sew and flip manner, press for crispness.

Trim to 12.5 inches

Remove paper.

Giselle used this paper from the Dollar Store for her blocks. To make a full 12.5 inch block, just zigzag stitch two pages together and cut to size. I used newsprint sheets that I have for batik wax removal.

Total blocks required: 35
UPDATE: JULY 22 - We have enough to complete the top! Thanks everyone!

October 29th update: We have received enough blocks to make two tops! Thank you!

January 27th, 2020 update: Giselle is piecing the second top

Tiny house quilt block (click on the name to go to the video tutorial)

The second block is the Tiny house block, again using a Missouri Star video tutorial. These blocks will be made in solids using a bright palette. The unfinished block is small, 4.5" x 6", so accuracy is important! If you need a refresher on sewing a scant 1/4 " seam and accuracy in general, watch Krista Hennebury's webinar on the Modern Quilt Guild site.

All paid members of the Moncton MQG are members of the Modern Quilt Guild so log in at the Modern Quilt Guild.

  • Click on FOR MMQ Members.
  • Click on Pattern, Webinars and Articles.
  • On the right hand sidebar, filter by Webinars.
  • Filter by Piecing.
  • Open Krista's webinar called, "Who Gives a Flying FQ About Accuracy".
The fabric and measurements required for each block:
2 house sides - 2" x 3"
1 house above door - 1.5" x 4.5"
1 door - 1.5" x 3"
1 roof - 2.5" x 4.5"
2 sky - 2.5" square (please use blue)

Make your house blocks vibrant with strong contrasting colors, again all in solid fabrics and with blue sky pieces.

4.5" x 6" unfinished block. That scant 1/4 inch seam will be super important. A great block to practice accuracy!

These blocks will make one fun, bright quilt for Hospice!

Total blocks required: 182
UPDATE: August 27 - including the last blocks from the kits that are still being sewn, we have enough Tiny House blocks. Thank you!

October 29th update: We have one top completed and being quilted and a second top being pieced. Thank you!

Woven Scrap Quilt

Giselle suggests that you use strips 6-7 inches long and 1 or 1.5 inches wide, sew them in lengths then cut them down to 11 or 11.5 inches and then when your block is complete, trim it down to 10.5 inches unfinished. She would also like us to use solids and prints.

Calculated size = 60 x80 inches

24 blocks @ 10.5 inches unfinished

Instructions: Sew strips of fabric in varying sizes and colors in straight lines, jelly roll style.

The blocks will be sashed with 3 inch (unfinished) solid color, preferably a neutral tone.

UPDATE October 6, 2019 - We have 9 blocks and need 15 more
October 29th update: We have 18 blocks and need 6 more!
January 27th update: Darline Ashford is completing the last 5 blocks required. Thanks, Darline!
