Monthly Meeting - Monday, June 24, 2019

On a brilliant summer evening, members piled into our new digs for the first extended hours summer meeting! Ironing stations were set up, extension cords and power bars were plugged in, a table was raised, a cutting mat laid out and the tables around the room gradually starting filling up with sewing machines and projects to hand sew. We even welcomed a brand new member, Deb Crosby and had a guest visiting us for the evening.

New member, Deb quickly got set up and Yvonne joined her soon after. These two sewed all evening!
Members arrive and get organized to work.

Deb EW trims the Hospice slab quilt she so graciously quilted for the guild.

Kim trims while Joanne looks on.
Giselle got set up to work on an older UFO.
Susan shows a piece in progress.
Pat checks out some modern reading.

Giselle gave us an update on the completed tops for Hospice and she and Deb showed the colorful slab quilt that she quilted for us. Giselle introduced the next two quilt blocks (String Block in pinks and greens and Tiny Houses in solids) and showed samples of each.

All info for the Hospice blocks can be found on the blog dashboard under Charity and Comfort Quilts
Deb quilted the slab quilt with blocks made by a number of members
Modern Boy top completed at the last Sew Day.
Second Modern Boy top completed at the last Sew Day

The block lotto saw 23 beautiful modern blocks going home to Jodi and Deb EW introduced the next block, the adorable I Spy Jar with instructions to make it in a sewing theme and a solid black background! So get making those blocks and get your name in for the draw in July! Who wouldn't want a sewing jar quilt for their naps and cuddle times?? (Link will also be on the blog dashboard under Block Lotto.)

Modern Improv Block #2 - Playful Placement

Kim introduced the next two blocks for her challenge: Road to California and Patience Corner. She also encouraged members to try an applique block and create 13 blocks for your piece. All information about the Challenge is found on the blog dashboard under Challenge.

Completed challenge pieces are due in September! Can't wait to see all them all!

Carol asked members to bring in modern quilting books and we all had a chance to flip through them. I heard several people say that they would be ordering a certain book now that they had seen it.
Modern Patchwork caught my eye...lots of curved sewing in that one!

Carol also gave a quick demonstration on making fabric postcards and distributed pre-cut pieces of Peltex as we are participating in a swap with the PEIMQG this fall.

Although we display all Show and Share pieces all evening with cards with the maker's name on it, we all love to see the pieces in their full glory..

Lise "helps"...lots of twisting and turning..lol

Finally we see our guest's lovely Show and Share. Sorry I didn't catch her name..

Carol's half square triangles. Wish I had taken a photo of her backing..fantabulous fabric for a beautiful quilt top!
Deb EW was inspired by Darline's Block Lotto choice for the month, Modern Improv. She explained how she trimmed much of the grey off once the blocks were complete to achieve a better balance of color. This was a crowd favorite!
Yvonne's fun owls! This woman keeps busy! So many quilts and so densely quilted!
See what I mean!!
Our next scheduled meeting is July 29th! Hope to see you there!

Our new location!

We are pretty excited about our new location! And our extended summer hours!

Our meetings will now be held at the Christ-Roi/Christ the King Catholic Church, 300 Dominion Street on the corner of Dominion and Essex, just off Mountain Road at St. Augustine's Catholic Church. There is a huge parking lot for our use across the street from the entrance and there is street parking as well (if needed).

Enter through the double glass doors on the left, then go down the stairs to the massive, massive well lit room we will be using. There are washrooms, a huge kitchen that will be very useful on Sew Days, washrooms, a storage closet for our gear, and a stage..which will be very useful for trunk shows and workshops.

We are continuing to meet throughout the summer and for the months of June, July and August we are extending our hours to 5 - 9 pm so come and sew with your quilting friends! We will have our regular relaxed meeting/housekeeping session at 6:30 pm, introduce our program and then keep on sewing!

We now have three ironing boards, two with wool covers, a 24 x 36 inch cutting mat and table risers for everyone's use. We also have two extension cords and several surge protected power bars and so far, one iron. We will set up ironing stations at both the meetings and the Sew Days and these tools will be stored at the church year round. If you have an extension cord and a power bar, and if anyone is interested in donating an iron, please bring them along until we see how our set up will best work.

Our Sew Days will be held the second Saturday of every month beginning August 10th. The days will run from 8 am to 6 pm and we welcome everyone to come and sew with us! For a 5.00 fee there will be treats and a few door prizes, just to keep our spirits up and our energy levels running high. Membership is not a requirement.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Monday!

Our next Hospice Quilt Blocks

Giselle would like to announce the next two Hospice quilt blocks!

String quilt block (click on the name to go to the video tutorial)

She has chosen pinks and greens for the string block with a common white strip across the diagonal centre of each block. The strips can be any width and the white can be a solid or tone on tone.

All the instructions are on the Missouri Star tutorial (click on the link above) but here are some photos of our process to help you along:

Unfinished size = 12.5"

Unfinished size = 12.5"

Use a short machine stitch (I used 1.5 on my Pfaff)to add the strips. The short, tight stitch makes removing the paper super easy and quick. As each strip is added in a sew and flip manner, press for crispness.

Trim to 12.5 inches

Remove paper.
Giselle used this paper from the Dollar Store for her blocks. To make a full 12.5 inch block, just zigzag stitch two pages together and cut to size. I used newsprint sheets that I have for batik wax removal.
Total blocks required: 35

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tiny house quilt block (click on the name to go to the video tutorial)

The second block is the Tiny house block, again using a Missouri Star video tutorial. These blocks will be made in solids using a bright palette. The unfinished block is small, 4.5" x 6", so accuracy is important! If you need a refresher on sewing a scant 1/4 " seam and accuracy in general, watch Krista Hennebury's webinar on the Modern Quilt Guild site.

All paid members of the Moncton MQG are members of the Modern Quilt Guild so log in at the Modern Quilt Guild.

  • Click on FOR MMQ Members.
  • Click on Pattern, Webinars and Articles.
  • On the right hand sidebar, filter by Webinars.
  • Filter by Piecing.
  • Open Krista's webinar called, "Who Gives a Flying FQ About Accuracy".
The fabric and measurements required for each block:
2 house sides - 2" x 3"
1 house above door - 1.5" x 4.5"
1 door - 1.5" x 3"
1 roof - 2.5" x 4.5"
2 sky - 2.5" square (please use blue)

Make your house blocks vibrant with strong contrasting colors, again all in solid fabrics and with blue sky pieces.

4.5" x 6" unfinished block. That scant 1/4 inch seam will be super important. A great block to practice accuracy!

This will be one fun, bright quilt for Hospice!

Total blocks required: 182

Modern Quilting Book Reviews

Many thanks to member, Louise McShane for the following book reviews. Louise graciously brought a selection of her own modern quilting books to one of our meetings and then provided us with reviews for any member who didn't get a chance to have a look through them.

The Modern Quilt Workshop, by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr, 2005

This book shows novice and expert quilters alike new ways of planning, designing, and constructing contemporary/modern quilts. With the use of various patterns, the authors help you develop new skills in design and piecing for modern quilts. A wonderful addition to your library as reference for unique patterns.

Lucky spool’s Essential Guide to Modern Quilt Making, compiled by Suzanne Woods, 2014

The book provides 10 mini workshops and 16 patterns pertaining to Modern quilting. It’s a must have book for those seeking to understand what a modern quilt is, and the components in creating one

Workshop topics include: viewing color with a critical eye, thinking outside the box in quilt design and settings, breaking out of the grid, English paper piecing by machine, improv piecing, incorporating curves and finally a gallery of 50 modern quilts curated by Heather Grant of The Modern Quilt Guild. Detailed instructions and inspirational patterns encourage practice and ensure success.

Modern Minimal; 20 Bold & graphic quilts; by Alissa Haight Carlton, 2012

Alissa Haight Carlton, co-founder of The Modern Quilt Guild, provides 20 projects using lots of open space (negative space) to create fresh and stunning quilts.  The patterns are excellent in developing graphic skills when designing your own quilts.

Not only does she provide quilt making patterns, she also provides quilting ideas to finish the complete project.

Quilts Made Modern; Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr, 2010

The book provides explanations of color and design theory in creating modern quilts. Using 10 projects the authors explain as well as show alternative colors and fabrics to explain the use of these elements. A definite must have book.

Improv Patchwork; dynamic quilts made with line & Shape; by Maria Shell, 2017

Using basic quilting techniques the reader is shown how to create improvisational patterns and quilts. Cut and combine solid-color fabrics to create your own "prints" - stripes, polka dots, chevrons, plaids, and more. Forget the rules (and even your ruler) as you piece colorful solids into compelling quilt designs. Use color, pattern, and repetition to develop your personal design aesthetic as you stitch freely to create unique quilts that pack a punch!

It’s an excellent book to developing improv skills.
