May Monthly Meeting

Another great meeting with some guests to share in our fun! There was a demo by Charla on postcards in preparation for our swap with the PEIMQG and next month we will be working on postcards at the meeting. Carol has posted a helpful video on our FB page. As well, Carol has asked us to bring in our favorite modern quilt book next month for some sharing about our best and most useful reads on the subject.

Kim presented the next three blocks in our Challenge: Really Split 9 Patch, Maple Leaf and Indiana Circle. All info can be found under Challenges on the dashboard.

Our Bring and Buy Table continues to get support for our community work, the Moncton Hospice

Funds raised will help purchase batting and backings

June's block lotto block, Modern Improv  Quilt Block #2 - Playful Placement was presented by Darline. Find the instructions under Block Lotto on the dashboard.

Pat was back from her winter down south and showed some of her beautiful pieces.

Some of our members were busy at Sew Day on the weekend and brought some of the tops they finished to show. By all accounts, a grand time was had by all who attended!

And we had some show and share.

Check our Yvonne's beautiful quilt!

Lovely quilting as always!

We announced that going forward we will have a new meeting location - Christ-Roi/Christ the King Catholic Church, 300 Dominion Street. Details are in the dashboard under Meetings.

We have also agreed on meeting during the summer months and our Sew Days will be each month on the second Saturday.

Watch for more details on meeting times and Sew Day plans!

Saturday, 25 May 2019

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, May 27th.

Don't forget to bring:
  • Donations for the Bring and Buy Hospice Fundraiser Box (as well as money to buy goodies!)
  • $4.00 for your name badge
  • Block lotto blocks (Summer School)
  • Kim's Challenge Blocks
  • Show and Share

Our sewing time will be spent working on our Challenge blocks. This will be your opportunity to ask questions or seek help from Kim regarding this project. Bring your machine, sewing kit and fabrics. If you haven't started the Challenge, this is a great time to do so, but if you choose not to participate, bring one of your own projects to work on.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

New members always welcome!

Our next Sew Day is in conjunction with members who meet in St-Andre-LeBlanc!

MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY...rescue your UFOs retreat.

This retreat will give you the opportunity to work on you UFOs before summer is upon us so they don’t
float out into outer space!!!

The mini retreat will be held in St‐André‐LeBlanc for 3 days, May 24, 25 and 26. You can come 1 day, 2 days or all 3, it is totally up to you. The cost is $5.00 per day. We can leave our sewing machine overnight, go home to get some sleep and return the next day at whatever time you want. No stress week‐end. The doors will open at 8 AM each morning and close at ??? whenever everybody leaves!

We have access to the kitchen (fridge, stove and microwave) and the bar so bring some money!!! We were thinking of doing a potluck for the lunches and or supper, so if you have a specialty and you want to share, please feel free to bring a dish of something. On the Friday I was thinking of bringing a Chili and Gisèle is making tea biscuits, Elaine suggested she might do a lasagna, Jackie a Shepard’s pie, (they didn’t specify which day). And don’t forget the sweets!!!

As you know, the coudeuses already have 3 ironing boards, 3 irons, cutting mats and boards, so no need to haul yours, just bring your sewing projects and you basic sewing supplies.

So the more the merrier, come and sew and have fun and rescue some UFOs!!!

April Program - Quilt As You Go

The program for our April meeting was a Quilt As You Go demo by Darline Ashford. Darline is known for her thorough explanations and demonstrations and tonight was no exception. She provided us with the information needed and demonstrated techniques she has successfully used. As well she shared tools she finds useful in this technique and told us where to get them. She also showed her ingenious system of sample making and there were lots of ohhhhh's around the room as we all realized the value in doing this.

Supply list provided and she also shared the following YouTube links to techniques below:

Hi everyone,

below are the links to the different methods we reviewed. This is an overload of information... enjoy!!

1. Machine stitched Quilt as you Go Hexagon (can be hand sewn vs machine) - this video is very similar but I did not have to press the blocks and I used wonderclips vs. pins as it was easier. If you do not have wonderclips you can you a paper clip or binding clips from and office supply store.

2. Quilt As You Go with Wide 2" Sashing

3. Quilts As You Go with narrow sashing on both sides - there are different videos and some use slightly different wide sashing - the sizes I used in my demo was 1" for the back and 1.5" folded in half - this is a Leah Day video

The video below is well presented to do a full quilt but she uses 1" and 2" folded  vs. the 1" and 1.5" fold in half I used - you may have to test to see the look you like the best. The option I use ensures the machine stitching on both side of the sashing stays on the sashing on the front and back, the wider 2" means the stitching will be on the backing fabric like the video.

Another video same idea but a bit shorter

4. Quilt As You Go - no sashing

Another video same idea with a bigger block being used - all machine

The last method with sashing on the back only I am not sure if there is a video but if I find one I will send it out.
