April 2019
4 QAYG Methods
1. Hexi Quilt As You Go – using Zig Zag or decorative stitch that will catch each side of
block. Can be uses in different shapes such as Hexi, square, rectangle or
diamonds
2. Sashing (front and back) – blocks can be fully quilted from edge to edge, sashing can be to
the slim and wide
3. Sashing (one side only) – sew all layer together and then press open in the front or back
based on where you want to see the sashing, can cause bulk in sashing recommend
removing the batting before adding the sashing cover. Sashing has to be
prepared with pressed under on both side before applied.
4. Flip and stitch – no sashing on front or back, this method can be used when
quilting in rows or rounds
Fabric supplies
if you wish to bring a machine and try a few methods
(Blocks can be as small as 5” charm pack square or
larger – the demo blocks will be 6.5” squares)
· Fabric blocks ready to be joined into 4 pairs, some of the can be pre-quilted but at least one set (of
2 blocks) should not be quilted for the method to work
Ø A total of 8 top fabric squares, 8 batting pieces and 8
backing pieces to make 8 blocks. The blocks can be all unquilted or 6 can be
pre-quilted but 2 fabric blocks need to be unquilted. All should be the same
size as top squares
Ø We will be connecting two blocks using different methods
resulting in 4 demo to use as a method guide in the future - if you use plain
fabric on one side and bring a fabric marker you can write the directions/sizes
on the demo piece for future reference
· Cut stripes the listed sizes below ensuring the length
of the stripes is equal to or just a bit longer than blocks being used
Ø Method 2a (2
blocks can be pre-quilted) - Cut joining strips, 1” wide for the back, and 1 ½”
wide for the front. Fold and press the 1 ½” piece in half (front sashing) with
the wrong side inside so that it is now 3/4 inch.
Ø Method 2b (2
blocks can be pre-quilted) - Cut joining strips, 2 1/2” wide for the back, and
1 ½” wide strip of batting. Fold and press a 4 ½” piece in half (front sashing)
with the wrong side inside
Ø Method 3 (2
blocks can be pre-quilted) – Cut joining strips1” wide. Only one sashing strip
is used but it is best if one side of raw edges be press under ¼” on each side
but not necessary
Ø Method 4 (2
blocks NOT quilted) – no sashing strips required
